Michel Sardou - Le France / Fais Des Chansons (1975) - single

Michel Sardou (born 26 January 1947) is a French singer, songwriter and occasional actor.
Sardou was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Caron (Jackie Sardou). He is the grandson of the comedian Valentin Sardou, as well as father of the French novelist Romain Sardou and the actor Davy Sardou.
In 1976 he released the album “La Vieille” (The Old Woman). The first single from it, "Le France" ("SS France"), released on November 1975, was a message of indignation addressed to the President of France Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who had just sold the ocean liner SS France. The controversial song was welcomed by the trade unions and the Communist Party even though Sardou was seen, because of several other songs, as an archetypal reactionary singer.

Randy Newman & Paul Simon - The Blues / Same Girl (1982) - single

Gilla - Ich Brenne / Du Bist Nicht Die Erste Liebe (1976) - single

Gilla (born Gisela Wuchinger, 27 February 1950) is an Austrian singer from the late 1970s disco era.
Gilla was discovered by German producer Frank Farian who got her signed to Hansa Records in 1974. After an unsuccessful German cover version "Mir ist kein Weg zu weit" of Marcella Bella's Italian hit single "Nessuno mai", Farian had her record a German disco version of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade". Despite being a modest hit (#24), it caused some attention of being the first German record to feature such explicit lyrics as "Willst du mit mir schlafen gehn?" (Do You Want to Sleep With Me) (1975). It was followed later in the year with "Tu es" (also recorded in English as "Why Don't You Do It") which became Gilla's biggest hit, peaking at #10 in the German charts and giving Farian a commercial breakthrough as a producer. Gilla's debut LP, featuring a mix of disco, pop and schlager tracks, was released shortly after.
In the summer of 1976, Gilla followed with "Ich Brenne" (I'm Burning), once again also recorded in English in 1977 as "Help Help". It was a Dutch hit single but fared less well in Germany. Farian remixed the track with his own vocals for inclusion on Boney M.'s “Take the Heat Off Me” to replace "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" in some territories.

Donna Summer - Winter Melody / Full Of Empiness (1977) - single

"Winter Melody" is a song by American singer and songwriter Donna Summer released as a single in early-1977 from her “Four Seasons of Love” album. It became a top 30 hit in the UK.
By this time Summer was making her name as the queen of disco music, though this song is a soul ballad.
The song represented the "winter" phase of the concept album, and speaks of a woman struggling to come to terms with the fact that her relationship has ended.
As with much of Summer's material at that time (particularly with songs found on her concept albums), the song played for a considerable amount of time (over six minutes), however, the song was edited for its release as a single.

The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You / Summers Night (1979) - single

The Tourists (1977–1980) were a British rock and pop band. They achieved brief success in the late 1970s before the band split in 1980. Two of its members, singer Annie Lennox and guitarist Dave Stewart, went on to achieve massive international success as Eurythmics.
Peet Coombes was a guitarist singer-songwriter, while Dave Stewart, also a guitarist, had been a member of the folk rock band, Longdancer, who were signed to Elton John's Rocket label. The two moved to London and encountered Scottish singer Annie Lennox who had dropped out of her course at the Royal Academy of Music, where she had been studying flute and keyboards, to pursue her ambitions in pop music.
"I Only Want to Be with You" is a rock-and-roll song by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde. The debut solo single released by British singer Dusty Springfield under her long-time producer Johnny Franz.
"I Only Want to Be With You" covered by The Tourists was a top 10 hit in Australia and made the US Billboard Hot 100 (#83). Coombes was the band's main songwriter, although later releases saw the first compositions by Lennox and Stewart, who were also in a relationship for a time. The band's music expanded using their folk roots, demonstrating some punk energy, reggae and 1960s pop influences. A key development was their decision to record later material with German avant-garde producer Conny Plank and a transfer to RCA Records in 1980.

Nick Kamen - Each Time You Break My Heart / Instrumental (1986) - single

Ivor Neville "Nick" Kamen (born 15 April 1962 in Harlow, Essex, England, England) is an English male model, songwriter and musician, and brother of session guitarist Chester Kamen.
"Each Time You Break My Heart" is his 1986 debut single from his debut album “Nick Kamen”, released in 1987.
Nick Kamen attained popularity in 1986 when his modelling career gave him the chance to star in Levi's "Launderette" television commercial. The clip showed him stripping down to stone-wash his blue jeans in a 1950s style public laundromat while he waits clad only in his boxer shorts, which was one of a series of Bartle Bogle Hegarty advertisements that dramatically increased the popularity of Levi 501s. The commercial, directed by Roger Lyons, was selected for, and came fourth in, The 100 Greatest TV Ads in 2000. Kamen later decided to delve into music, and released his self titled debut album in 1986. Written and produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray, "Each Time You Break My Heart" was the lead single from the album. Madonna had previously expressed interest in producing Kamen's record. But since she was busy shooting for her film, Who's That Girl then titled Slammer, she chose to write and compose one song. Madonna had originally written and recorded the song for her third studio album, “True Blue”, but it did not make the cut.

Bonnie Pointer - Heaven Must Have Sent You (Remix) / Heaven Must Have Sent You (Album Version) (1979) - single

Patricia Eva "Bonnie" Pointer (born July 11, 1950) is an American R&B and disco singer, most notable for being the next-to-youngest member of the 1970s and 1980s family music group, The Pointer Sisters. She scored several moderate solo hits after leaving the Pointers in 1977.
"Heaven Must Have Sent You" is a song written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland when at Motown, and first recorded by The Elgins in 1966.
Bonnie Pointer's version reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1979. A 12/8 shuffle, it begins with rhythmic tubular bells ringing. Violins supply the background for the entire song. After the bells, a funky bass guitar is played, as a refrain throughout the song. This can be heard three times between the verses. In the middle of the song, an instrumental interlude is played, with the tubular bells ringing. At the end of the song, Pointer sings her last lines "It's heaven, it's heaven, I'll love you more and more each day..." in a lower register, with a raspy tone, reminiscent of Al Jolson.

The Belle Stars were an all female British pop/rock band, founded in London in 1980 by former members of the 2 Tone ska revival band, The Bodysnatchers.
After The Bodysnatchers broke up, guitarists Stella Barker and Sarah-Jane Owen, saxophonist Miranda Joyce, keyboardist Penny Leyton, and drummer Judy Parsons decided to form a new band, recruiting bass player Lesley Shone and lead vocalist Jennie Matthias (also known as Jenny McKeown and Jenny Bellestar). Their first performance was on Christmas Day, 1980, before they had chosen a name.
"Sweet Memory" is their eighth single overall. Unlike its predecessor, “Sign of the Times”, it did not make it into the top 10. However, it did manage to get into the top 30.

The singer explains how she brings back terrible memories when thinking about how much hatred her and her lover portrayed.

Andrew Lloyd Webber - Theme And Variations 1-4 / Variation 16 (1978) - single

Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber (born 22 March 1948) is an English composer and impresario of musical theatre.
Several of his musicals have run for more than a decade both in the West End and on Broadway. He has composed 13 musicals, a song cycle, a set of variations, two film scores, and a Latin Requiem Mass.
“Variations” is a classical and rock fusion album. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and performed by his younger brother, the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.
The Lloyd Webber brothers were always very close but their two different careers (a rock musical composer and a classical cellist) meant that a collaboration seemed unlikely. It was not until Julian beat his brother in a bet on a Leyton Orient football match that Andrew was forced to write his cello work.
As his subject, Andrew chose the theme of Paganini's 24th caprice and added 23 variations for cello and rock band. The work premiered at the 1977 Sydmonton Festival with rock band Colosseum II, featuring Gary Moore, Jon Hiseman and Don Airey being joined by Barbara Thompson (sax, flute), Rod Argent (piano, synthesizer, keyboards) and Julian Lloyd Webber (cello). It was subsequently rearranged and recorded in 1978.

The Wurzels - The Combine Harvester (Brand New Key) / The Blackbird (1976) - single

The Wurzels are a Scrumpy and Western band from Somerset, England, best known for their number one hit “The Combine Harvester”.
The Wurzels were formed in 1966 as a backing group for, and by, singer/songwriter Adge Cutler. With a thick Somerset accent, Adge played on his West Country roots, singing many folk songs with local themes such as cider making (and drinking), farming, dung-spreading, local villages and industrial work songs, often with a comic slant.
During the latter half of the 1960s, the band became immensely popular regionally, and the release of the single "Drink Up Thy Zider" in 1966 led to national fame and it reaching number 45 in the UK chart. The B-side "Twice Daily" was banned by the BBC for being too raunchy.
In 1976, the Wurzels released "The Combine Harvester", a re-work of the song "Brand New Key", by Melanie, which became a UK hit, topping the charts for 2 weeks.

Wham! was an English musical duo formed by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley in the early 1980s. They were briefly known in the United States as Wham! UK due to a naming conflict with an American band. Wham! sold more than 25 million certified records worldwide from 1982 to 1986.
"Club Fantastic Megamix" was a single released by Wham! in 1983, and was the last single release for the duo on Innervision Records. It was approved by Mark Dean, the manager of Innervision Records. The single was released three months after Wham! had begun proceedings to leave the label, and was disapproved of by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The single, which consisted of a mix of the tracks "A Ray of Sunshine", "Love Machine", and "Come On" off the album “Fantastic”.
The only reason why the “Club Fantastic Megamix” was able to be released was because the songs had already been released. Prior to a song being released a publisher has the right to grant the first license of a tune of which he holds the copyright. Because those three tracks had already been released into the public domain, they were unable to do anything about preventing the release.

Ace - How Long / Sniffin´ About (1974) - single

Ace were a British rock band, who enjoyed moderate success in the 1970s. Their membership included Paul Carrack, who later became famous as the lead vocalist of Mike + The Mechanics and as a solo artist. Ace are best known for their hit single "How Long?", which was a UK top-20 single in 1974 and reached No 3 in the US in 1975.
The band was formed in December 1972 in Sheffield as 'Ace Flash and the Dynamos', but this name was quickly abbreviated to just Ace.[ The members were assembled from various other professional bands. Carrack and Comer had previously played with Warm Dust, and King with Mighty Baby, whose antecedents were the 1960s band The Action. Ace were popular on the pub rock circuit. Their music was pop with a funk influence. "How Long" is a 1974 song from their album “Five-A-Side”.
Although widely interpreted as being about adultery, the song was in fact composed by lead singer Paul Carrack upon discovering that bassist Terry Comer had been secretly working with other bands. Comer returned to Ace in time to play on the song.

Hamilton Bohannon - Foot Stompin´ Music / Dance With Your Parno (1975) - single

Hamilton Frederick Bohannon (born March 7, 1942), often credited and known professionally simply as Bohannon, is an American percussionist, band leader, songwriter and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music.
He was born in Newnan, Georgia, and learned the drums at school. He began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix, before graduating from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education. After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1967, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops and others.
When Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles, Bohannon stayed behind to form his own ensemble, featuring members of local band, The Fabulous Counts and including such musicians as Ray Parker Jr. and Dennis Coffey. He signed in 1972 with the Dakar label run by producer Carl Davis, and released his debut album Stop & Go in early 1973. This was followed by five more albums for the label over the next two years, on which he "perfected his formula of heavy, thudding bass accents and aggressive rhythms". Although several of his tracks were club hits, he had limited chart success. His first hit single, in 1974, was "South African Man", which reached no.78 on the Billboard R&B chart but had more success in the UK, where it reached no.22 on the pop chart. This was followed up in 1975 by "Foot Stompin Music" - his only record to reach the US Hot 100.

Jay Ferguson - Thunder Island / Love Is Gold (1977) - single

Jay Ferguson (born John Arden Ferguson; May 10, 1947) is an American rock/pop musician, known for his work with Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne, and his 1978 solo hit "Thunder Island".
"Thunder Island" is the lead single off of the album “Thunder Island”. The song reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978.
Despite the song's fairly high position on the music charts, the song receives little rotation on most modern classic rock radio stations, although it is Ferguson's most well-known song. It features American musician Joe Walsh on guitar. As this was Ferguson's only major hit as a solo artist, he is often tagged a one-hit wonder. His later career has been as a composer of music for television programs and films.

Roger - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Part 1) / I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Part 2) (1981) - single

Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999) was an American composer, songwriter, producer and the founder of the band Zapp who helped spearhead the funk movement and heavily influenced west coast hip hop due to the scene's heavy sampling of his music over the years. Troutman was well known for his use of the vocoder or the talk box, a device that is connected to an instrument (frequently a keyboard) to create different vocal effects. Roger used a custom-made talkbox the Electro Harmonix "Golden Throat," as well as a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesizer. As both band leader of Zapp and in his subsequent solo releases, he scored a bevy of funk and R&B hits throughout the 1980s.
In 1981, upon the fast-paced success of Zapp's first album, Troutman cut his first solo album, “The Many Facets of Roger”. Featuring his frenetic funk cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", the song exploded to number one on the R&B singles chart helping the album sell over a million copies.

The Knack - Good Girls Don´t / Frustrated (1979) - single

"Good Girls Don't" is a 1979 hit single written by Doug Fieger and released by the rock band The Knack, off their album “Get the Knack”. It was the follow-up to the group's number-one hit single, "My Sharona". "Good Girls Don't" was a No. 1 single in Canada. The song has since been covered by a number of artists, including The Chipmunks, Ben Folds, The Chubbies and The McRackins.
Fieger originally wrote "Good Girls Don't" in 1972, and claimed that he wrote the song with Johnny Cash's voice in mind. He had included it on three or four demos in various attempts to get a recording contract, including with The Knack. It was also one of the first songs The Knack recorded. They had made a demo which included "Good Girls Don't" and "That's What Little Girls Do" in 1978, despite which the band was turned down multiple times in their efforts to get their first record contract. By the time The Knack was recording “Get the Knack”, he was tired of the song and reluctant to record it, but was convinced by producer Mike Chapman to attempt one take. That one take was used on the album.

It was released as the second single from the album, following the top-ten hit "Heart and Soul" in January 1984. The single reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Dance Club Play chart.
When the theme song of the 1984 film Ghostbusters was released, Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarism, claiming that Parker had stolen the melody from "I Want a New Drug". "Enigma (Give a Bit of Mmh to Me)" - a song by French singer Amanda Lear released in 1978.
"Enigma" was released as the third single from Lear's second album, “Sweet Revenge”. Depending on territory, "Run Baby Run", "Hollywood Flashback" or "Gold" made the single B-side, all from “Sweet Revenge”. Different edit versions of the song appeared on respective releases. Unlike other three singles off the album, "Enigma" did not belong to the concept suite on side A. The track was composed by Rainer Pietsch and produced by Anthony Monn. Amanda Lear provided self-penned lyrics.
"Enigma" met with considerable success, charting at around Top 10 in the Netherlands and Italy, and remains one of Lear's most memorable tracks of the disco era. The singer intensively performed the song on TV as well as in her erotic 1978 movie Follie di notte, where it made the final. In 1998 Amanda re-recorded "Enigma" for her Back in Your Arms album.
