(477) XTC - All You Pretty Girls b/w Washaway (1984)

XTC was a New Wave band from Swindon, England, active between 1977 and 2005.
XTC doing a sea chantey at some point in its career seemed more than perfectly logical not only did it fit in with the band's stylistic experiments, it called up a sense of Old England so often evocatively touched on elsewhere in the band's work. Thus "All You Pretty Girls" from their seventh album "The Big Express", with Andy Partridge starting everything off as a dramatic, windswept call complete with martial drums before turning into a swaggering, fun stompalong. Much of the song itself is comparatively restrained it's easy to hear Partridge singing the verses much as he would for many other songs and albums but it's the steady drum punch on the one hand and the kicky whistles and squeezebox on the other that gives the song its enjoyable atmosphere. As for the lyrical invocation asking the narrator's friends to bass on his best wishes to those women 'watching and waiting by the sea,' what better vision for a heterosexual sailor's heart?

(476) Aztec Camera - All I Need Is Everything b/w Jump (1984)

Aztec Camera were a Scottish New Wave band from the town of East Kilbride, near Glasgow, formed in 1980 and centred around teenage singer-songwriter Roddy Frame.
"Knife" (1984) is their second album and was produced by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
The infectious "All I Need Is Everything," benefits greatly from the Dire Straits leader's input. The introduction of keyboards (played by Knopfler's bandmate Guy Fletcher) colors the sound but doesn’t dominate the arrangement, which is rooted by a hypnotic high-register guitar figure by Malcolm Ross.

(473) The Lotus Eaters - You Don´t Need Someone New b/w Two Virgins Tender (1983)

Liverpool, England's the Lotus Eaters were mistakenly included in the New Romantic movement when they first appeared. However, although Peter Coyle (vocals), Jeremy Kelly (guitar), Mike Dempsey (bass), and Stephen Creese (drums) had the elegant attire and fashionable haircuts of New Romantic bands, their music was more understated and folksy than the synthesized Euro disco of Japan, Visage, and Duran Duran. The Lotus Eaters formed in 1982. Coyle was originally a member of the Jass Babies while Kelly played guitar for the Wild Swans with ex-Teardrop Explodes keyboardist Paul Simpson. Coyle and Kelly wanted to work together, but the Jass Babies had no need for a guitarist. Consequently, they began recording as the Lotus Eaters and were signed to Arista Records. In 1983, the Lotus Eaters released "You Don´t Need Someone New" taken from their 1984 debut album "No Sense Of Sin".

(469) Buckeye - Where Will Your Heart Take You b/w That Kind Of Man (1979)

With a name like Buckeye, one would assume these guys come from the state of Ohio - where everything is synonomous with the term 'buckeye', as 'hoosier' is with the state of Indiana. Don't think I've ever seen a band called Hoosier though, which leads us over the stateline perhaps? No it doesn't, Buckeye have their soft rock origins in Los Angeles, where a bunch of other bands playing a similar style like Couchois, Gulliver and Sneaker were making inroads as well. Some of Buckeye's members were quite prolific in their day. Price has played with many different bands, as had Katona, who has credits with Rare Earth, Redbone. Price and Katona even appeared together on the 1981 Fortress album 'Hands In The Till'. Thom Fowle and Price also did some work with Nigel Olsson and his album 'Dancin' Shoes' plus Paul Davis' 1977 album 'Singer Of Songs Teller Of Tales'.
Since this was 1979, Buckeye threaded the needle of many genres that were turning this particular year upside. One could say this lot were fairly insulated from what was happening in the musical capitals of the world; L.A seemed to be in it's own little bubble of sunshine, and upon hearing the songs here, you can imagine how bright and happy their world must've been. Whether it's the vocal harmony richness of 'Wonder Where (Will Your Heart Take You)' from their self-titled album in 1979.

(466) Colin Scot - Mandolin Man (1977)

Colin Scot was of origin a British folk and blues singer/guitarist. After wanderings of Amsterdam, Paris, California and Mallorca, he returned to England and worked the well-known English folkcircuit. He recorded there 3 albums. Colin was one of the legions of troubadours pounding the provincial folk circuit back in the 60s when the demarcation lines between folk and rock were well drawn.  His tactic of covering Buddy Holly songs in his live set caused frowns from folkie purists but probably stood him in good stead when it came to supporting Van der Graaf Generator or King Crimson in the bigger venues. The graveyard support slot was always a tough spot, and Scot was better at it than many of his more famous contemporaries.  Scot had the kind of juice that attracted various members of Genesis, Lindisfarne, Van der Graaf Generator, Yes, Rare Bird, and Robert Fripp from King Crimson to populate his first album recorded in 1971.Scot’s yearning and muscular voice (reminiscent at times of an early Elton John or Alan Hull) is gritty and full-blooded and is used to best effect on the elegiac.
The single "Mandolin Man" his first single on the RCA label was produced by Tim Griek (ex-producer of the dutch bands Focus and Brainbox).

(430) BZN - Djadja / Dark Of The Night (1975)
