The Maisonettes - Heartache Avenue b/w The Last One To Know (1983) - single

The Maisonettes were a 'one hit wonder' English pop band formed by Lol Mason (formerly of City Boy) and Mark Tibenham. Their debut single, "Heartache Avenue", reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart in early 1983.
The song was discovered by David Virr in a pile of demo tapes in his office, and had been recorded in Birmingham by singer Lol Mason, guitarist Mark Tibenham, and session drummer Nick Parry. Virr decided to put it out on his own label, which he named Ready Steady Go!
To fill out the band, two teenage models, Denise Ward and Elaine Williams, were recruited as backing vocalists (although "Heartache Avenue" had been recorded with different female singers). As it turned out, however, Ward and Williams could not harmonize well enough to sing with the band live or in the studio, though by the time this was decided, they had already appeared often with the group in media photos and miming on television. In 1984 their album, “Maisonettes for Sale”, was released, including "Heartache Avenue" and ten other songs. With no further hits, the group soon disbanded.

Diesel - Down In The Silvermine b/w Ready For Love (1980) - single

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T´aime...Moi Non Plus b/w Jane B (Reissue) (1976) - single

Jane Mallory Birkin, OBE (born 14 December 1946) is an English actress and singer based in France. She is perhaps best known for her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1970s and being the namesake of the popular Hermès Birkin bag.
Birkin emerged in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s, appearing briefly in the counterculture era film Blowup (1966) and as the fantasy-like model in the psychedelic film Wonderwall (1968). That same year, she auditioned in France for the lead female role in the film Slogan (1969). Though she did not speak French, she won the role, co-starring alongside Serge Gainsbourg, and she performed with him on the film's theme song, "La Chanson de Slogan"  the first of many collaborations between the two. In 1969, she and Gainsbourg released the duet "Je t'aime... moi non plus" ("I love you... me neither"). Gainsbourg originally wrote the song for Brigitte Bardot. The song caused a scandal for its sexual explicitness, and was banned by radio stations in Italy, Spain, and the UK.
"Je t'aime" made UK chart history in that on 4 October 1969 and the following week on 11 October, the song was at two different chart positions even though it is the same song, the same artists, and the same recorded version. The only difference was that they were on different record labels. It was originally released on the Fontana label, but due to its controversy, Fontana withdrew the record which was then released on the Major Minor label. Because there were Fontana singles still in the shops along with the Major Minor release, on 4 October 1969 the Major Minor release was at number 3 and the Fontana single at number 16. Also at that time it was the biggest ever selling single for a completely foreign language record.

Mr. Mister - Kyrie b/w Run To Her (1986) - single

"Kyrie" is a song by American pop rock band Mr. Mister, from their 1985 album “Welcome to the Real World”. Released in late 1985, it hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in March 1986, where it was #1 for two weeks.
The words to "Kyrie" were written by Arizona-born lyricist John Lang who co-wrote the songs on all of Mr. Mister's albums. The music was composed by Richard Page and Steve George while on tour with Adam Ant.
Kýrie, eléison means "Lord, have mercy" in Greek, and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity. Kýrie, eléison; Christé, eléison; Kýrie, eléison is a prayer that asks "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy".According to Page the entire song is, essentially, a prayer.
There is a myth that singer Richard Page wrote this song while lying in a hospital bed following an attack. John Lang has stated that he was the one who was attacked, three years before "Kyrie" was written, and that the incident has nothing to do with the song.

"Radio Radio" is a single by Elvis Costello and The Attractions released in the United Kingdom in October 1978. The song had already appeared on the US version of their second album, “This Year's Model”, released earlier that year. The song is a protest song concerning the commercialisation of radio broadcasts and the restrictions that prevented many punk songs from being played. It includes a reference to the BBC's ban of the Sex Pistols' 1977 single "God Save the Queen".

Shalamar - Dead Giveaway b/w I Don´t Wanna Be The Last To Know (1983) - single

Shalamar is an American music group, active in the 1970s and 1980s, that was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and show creator Don Cornelius. They went on to be an influential dance trio, masterminded by Soul Train producer Don Cornelius.
The group took a knock when Watley and Daniel separately left the band over conflicts within the group and other issues with Dick Griffey and Solar Records.
Adding to the subsequent departure was Watley's increasing frustration with SOLAR Records and Dick Griffey shortly after the release of their next album, “The Look”, in 1983.
Nonetheless, the album yielded a number of UK hit singles including "Disappearing Act", "Dead Giveaway" and "Over and Over". The album itself moved Shalamar into a more new wave/synthpop direction, with rock guitars to the fore.

Steve Miller Band - Macho City b/w Fly Like An Eagle (1981) - single

Still, no one could've predicted the 16-plus-minute disco-DJ set approximation that is 1981's "Macho City," which takes up the entire B-side of their eleventh album “Circle of Love”. In part piggybacking off the 1979 club success of Chicago's "Street Player"  and, as a result, ushering in an era when rock bands routinely attempted to get a hit via club culture  "Macho City" is nevertheless so uncompromising in its dedication to the dance floor that you can't dismiss it as cynical or calculating.
Drums that look back to the Fatback Band's lead-footed swing provide the anchor as rhythmic rock diverts into trippy sound effects (hi-hats skittering like raindrops leading into actual, full-on thunderstorm FX, plus beefy guitars that groan like an airplane taking off) amid plenty of funk riffing and noodling. It consciously invokes Nicky Siano's unpredictable DJ sets at the Loft and Studio 54, where he famously mixed in the sounds of rainfall and planes flying overhead to add more atmosphere to the club.

Van Halen - Pretty Woman b/w Happy Trails (1982) - single

"Oh, Pretty Woman" (originally issued as "Pretty Woman") is a song recorded by Roy Orbison, written by Orbison and Bill Dees.
The lyrics tell the story of a man who sees a pretty woman walking by. He yearns for her and wonders if, as beautiful as she is, she might be lonely like he is. At the last minute, she turns back and joins him. The title was inspired by Orbison's wife, Claudette, interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out.
In 1982 the song – titled "(Oh) Pretty Woman" – was covered by the group Van Halen on their album “Diver Down”, preceded by a guitar-driven intro titled "Intruder". The music video, which had the band dress as a samurai (played by bassist Michael Anthony), Tarzan (played by drummer Alex Van Halen), a cowboy (played by guitarist Eddie Van Halen), and Napoleon (played by frontman David Lee Roth), per a hunchbacked onlooker's request, rescuing a captive girl that turns out to be a transvestite) for this version was one of the first banned by MTV, due to its opening sequence, where the captive girl is tied up and fondled against her will by a pair of little people (the ban was eventually lifted, as MTV sister network VH1 Classic would later air the video). This was their second Top 20 pop hit, peaking at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
